What are the things to know about social media?

The world is advancing every single day, hour, minute and second. And of course, we have to advance also. But we should know some specific things about social media.

Social media came to improve our social interactions and welfare. And so far, it has been fulfilling that purpose.

But there are somethings that we do and it really affects us. And I’m going to tell you these things based on my own personal experiences and choices

Don’t follow the wrong people on social media.

Don’t follow the wrong people on social media

I followed people that aren’t related to my interest or niche, but because of the their lifestyle.

This is one of the many mistakes that most people make. I followed many big and popular personalities who lived an extravagant life. And most times, I found my self esteem diminish.

There are some people that show only the rosy part of their lives and make you feel bad.

I know of a lady who just divorced her husband and the husband ran away with the kids. She then became too depressed and started harming herself.

But this same lady took to Instagram and uploaded pictures of her in her 2019 Lexus and 2019 Mercedes parked beside her. She then uploaded a picture of her in the best restaurant in Dubai.

My point is

Sometimes we follow top people on social media and we forget that these people are also humans and have problems that they are facing.

But most of the time, you see only the better part of their lives being uploaded and think they don’t have any problems at all. You think that maybe their money or fame is solving all their problems.

And by doing this, you carry the wrong mindset. And what’s that?

The mindset that once you get to the peak of your career or life, you won’t have any problems again.

And this is just a plain lie.

Don’t let anyone deceive you. Even when you become so wealthy and famous, challenges is no respecter of your fame or wealth. So you might still battle with some challenges or the other.

So if you must follow that top person on your social media feed, understand that the person might be facing challenges like you and you will not let any of his/her wealth or fame to diminish your self esteem or self evaluation

It’s okay to quit social media ✅

It’s okay to quit social media

If social media is more of an harm than blessing to you, it’s okay to quit.

Some people believe that they would be called “idiots” if they openly tell everyone that they are not on any social media. Or not on a famous one.

But it’s not true.

In fact, do you know that if you can take a break from social media and build physical relationships with people, you will even be more happy and contented? Of course!

Like me, I have decided to temporarily quit WhatsApp on my phone. I have also decided to delete my twitter account also.

Why?

I figured out that Whatsapp and Twitter are the only two social media platforms that give me more of distractions than benefits.

On WhatsApp, I will spend hours reading status updates and hours on Twitter, reading trending news.

Even though I have almost 500 + daily views on Whatsapp, I still quit it temporarily because I felt I wasn’t getting enough benefits from it.

So right now, I’m focusing on growing my Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

So if a particular platform is giving you problems or just taking away a lot of your time, it’s best to temporarily or permanently quit it.

You don’t have to be on all the social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, Tiktok, etc)

Just pick the ones that best fits your needs and you are good to go.

I advise you just pick 3 or 4 platforms. And make sure that you will receive the utmost benefits from these platforms.

Summary💐

The two main points in this article is:

1. if you must follow that top person on your social media feed, understand that the person might be facing challenges like you are. And you will not let any of his/her wealth or fame/ lifestyle to diminish your self esteem and self evaluation and think of your own life as miserable.

2. if a particular social media platform is giving you problems of addictions or just taking away a lot of your time, it’s best to temporarily or permanently quit it, so that you can focus on other important life issues of yours.

I think blog counts as a social media. Since we do socialize on blogs.

You’ve never been on another social media platform? Like Facebook, etc?

Thanks so much for reading 😊

  2. This is so true. A hiatus from WhatsApp and Instagram does wonders.
You see so many people who are miserable because of these apps and the social pressure, but also cannot stop using them.
I was one of them until a few months back when I went off all social media. I realise there’s so much more outside when compared to the merits of these apps.
And now, I am back on them, but am mostly passive!

I really could relate to this

    1. Your experience is very similar to mine. Many people know the self harm that social media causes, but they just can’t force themselves to stop using them.

I wanted to write a book and for 3 years, I couldn’t complete it. It was then that I knew what must be done.

I just picked some platforms that goes with what I do.

Thanks so much for reading and dropping your thoughtful comment. I really appreciate it

      How are you doing?

    1. Yes, you are absolutely right. The problem of wanting to quit but not able to, is what makes social media harmful to some people.

      1. 😅no I haven’t. I don’t intend to monetize this blog

I will open another self hosted professional website and monetize that

The type of community on this blog wouldn’t fit monetization

        😂

        Look forward to it.
Why so? The readers seem capable of looking at a random ad here and there 😂

      3. Yes. I thought of monetizing this one, but I have many people here who are teenagers and kids. So I felt I should open another professional website and use that website to implement my vision of becoming a growth coach, so people will get to know my website as professional not hobby. 😅😅

I felt I should explain more to you

  3. 💯I’m not that active on social media like I used to be, and life has been better since then. But whenever I go back and see everyone else’s life seeming to be happy and fruitful while I’m here just trying to get through a dull day, I just tell myself that social media is just an illusion! Great post! 😊

    1. Yes, I can relate to this.

When I quit social media for few months, I’m always so happy with my personal growth. And there’s this peace of mind that comes with the absence of social media.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it

  4. Interesting choices. I kept WhatsApp and just reopened Twitter. I have no emotional attachment to Twitter and I use WhatsApp for school anyways, which ended up being my main way to communicate with people.

I quit Facebook and Instagram because they were making me feel bad. I’m considering using FB messenger again but I’m not in any hurry to use it. I don’t mind texting – it’s everything else that’s bothersome. It’s true that social media can make us feel bad. It happened to me on multiple occasions, so I started questioning it which led to taking a hiatus. 2 years later and I’m still on that hiatus.

    1. Thanks Hilary. It’s okay to keep the platforms that resonates with our interests. Since Whatsapp is a huge benefit to you, then it’s absolutely alright to keep it.

Exactly. Instagram especially. Sometimes we see posts of people making life look so easy. Then we question our own abilities and capabilities. This is where the harmful aspect comes in.

Taking a hiatus is extremely sensible. The problem that most people have is that they are more concerned about what people think about their actions of taking a break from social media, instead of how mentally stable they would be if they take the break

  5. Very good post on social media. I do not follow anyone who is a celebrity not interested in their fake life. Twitter I gave up years ago with nearly 2,000 followers I posted my own quotes, I reduced the numbers many times. Then stopped it is hard work to maintain Twitter and I do not have that mentality, I cannot be jumping through hoops all the time. Facebook I stopped using that and they have what they call community standards you can get blacklisted for going against their standards whatever they are. WhatsApp use it to speak with close friends and family only. Another difficult one to block people permanently and if you reinstall it to clear names off you only get those you blocked following you again. Most of them are annoying. WordPress is the only one I stay with.

    Blessings to you

    1. Exactly. Extremely valuable points you’ve made.

Twitter indeed is so much hard world to maintain. Sometimes, an account might have 10k followers and the engagements would be very minimal.

Facebook generally is starting to lose its quality value.

If WordPress is what best serves your purpose, then it’s alright to go with it.

But I really love the fact that you could identify the specific problems that you have with these social media platforms and tackle it successfully.

That shows how strong willed and powerful your mindset is. 👏🏽

  7. Thanks for this outstanding inspiration Vincent. I personally cut my interactions on Twitter by more than half because of its addictive nature. Also, I like to think social media is only a channel rather than a bid deal so I post when I’m comfortable and ensure that it doesn’t dictate whateve happens to me.

  8. Most importantly , there are some people out there who make money off of you through their social media. Like putting up ads or something and not informing other people about it. That’s horrible!! I recently came to know about it!!

I think they should inform other people about such things 🙄

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, they either use ads or affiliate marketing. (Where you make purchases through their sites and they earn commissions for them)

Well, some people will tell you about it. Others might not tell you about it.

I guess it’s the character that differs.

But if it’s me, if I would do it, I will definitely inform them.

  10. Exactly why I don’t consider Using Social Media. I am just a viewer on YouTube. I use my Mom’s WhatsApp.
Instagram is mostly just begging for followers to increase social status. There are thots with filters. There are Celebs. Few Common People are there. Fewer with great content. Thankfully, those who do also own other platforms to show their work. Facebook is Filled with Karens. I think I’ll try Reddit before dying.

    1. You are absolutely right! I also did that. I compared my life to the posts I saw on social media, and most times, I just felt very bad of my present life.

Social media has its advantages and disadvantages.

We should be very careful with what we do on it!
