Why The Chicken Is My Favorite Animal ๐Ÿ“

There were multiple times when we had a pet show display at my university. Twice a year, people brought their pets to display fantastic attributes and lovely features of them.

And each time I saw people bring cute and intelligent dogs, cats and every other cool animals. And I just had chickens (so I couldnโ€™t bring them)๐Ÿ˜‚

Well, let me set something straight..

The chicken isnโ€™t my pet๐Ÿ˜‚ itโ€™s my favorite animal. You know, just like how the Lion can be your favorite animal, but canโ€™t be your pet. (Lol, I donโ€™t even understand what I said there๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚)

How and why did I become so interested in chickens? Iโ€™m going to tell you now.

I believe all animals are so unique in their own ways. And itโ€™s just funny how animals relate with themselves.

I always loved poultry right from childhood.

I would snatch an egg from a mother Henโ€™s nest, and run away with it๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚then the mother will come chasing me from behind. ๐ŸคฃIt was always a fun thing to do, especially when I was so bored.

But now, I have graduated from snatching eggs, to snatching chicks ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I would wait for the prodigal chick to go away from itโ€™s mama, then I will snatch it๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. The chick makes a cry, and the mama comes flying at me. Then I run ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚with the chick.

But the funniest and weird thing about it all is that, the cock/roaster has joined in the chicken rebellion against me๐Ÿ˜‚the roasters now chase me also, together with the Hen. And believe me, you donโ€™t want to be pecked by an angry mom and dad ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

So I had to stop snatching eggs and chicks ๐Ÿคฃ

The day a roaster annoyed me

His name was Olomida ๐Ÿ˜‚. I donโ€™t know why I gave him that name, why did I even name the chickens?!! Iโ€™m yet to understand ๐Ÿ˜‚

I love seeing the chickens play around. Hardly do I kill them or sell them. I just love seeing them fight for supremacy, power, pecking order, etc

So on a particular day, I let out the chickens to play. I was hungry, so I went home, made a quick food, then came back to the chicken land to see how they were doing.

I wanted to go get something (I think water) so I put my food down. I put it in a place that I knew the chickens wouldnโ€™t get to.

But one particular roaster (the oldest of them all) was super smart. He flew up there and started eating my food! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

A quick reminder*** Animals donโ€™t respect and fear me, they just donโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

It got me so angry, but I couldnโ€™t do anything. I couldnโ€™t eat the food again ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ซI couldnโ€™t go back to do more. So I just sat there looking hungry and angry.

An hungry man is an angry man.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

And what makes me so interested in the lifestyle of chickens is their way of life.

Chickens are so underrated. We only think of them as domestic animals who are meant to make a delicious meal.

Well..while they do make delicious meals, they are also wonderful birds who have a very fun-to-watch lifestyle.

I will enlighten you about the chicken. There are some personal experiences and fun facts that I have observed about their lifestyle.

Chickens are caring about themselves

There was a time a roaster got his head stuck into a fence. He couldnโ€™t come out. He kept struggling but He just couldnโ€™t come out.

Meanwhile, I was playing a video game (GTA V) when the noise of other chickens alerted me.

โ€œWhat could be wrong?โ€ I asked myself

Initially, I thought maybe a predator was disturbing them, so I took a cutlass and a strong stick to defend myself and the chickens (not like I would use them if there was an actual predator ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚I might use my legs instead (to run), well, it depends what kind of predator it is๐Ÿ˜…)

I got to where they were and I was still confused. I couldnโ€™t see a snake. I couldnโ€™t see any wild animal.

But I noticed that some chickens were making a noise near a particular cock. This cock wasnโ€™t making the noise with them.

It was then that I moved closer and saw that a roaster got his head stuck in the small fence.

I helped him get free, and the noise stopped.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚immediately, the roaster went to go mate with a Hen. I was like โ€œreally!!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what you are going to do after gaining your freedom?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I guess the cock thought to himself

โ€œWow! So this is how life is?!!! Anyone can be gone at anytime, I have to quickly see my children (chicks). I might not to stay alive for much time againโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚(then he quickly went to mate)๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

The day 2 fully grown chickens died in one hour

I went to the cage of the chickens and released them all. But 2 cocks just wouldnโ€™t fly out with the rest.

I attempted to touch them, but they didnโ€™t show any resistance to me. They didnโ€™t avoid or peck at my hand. They were just sitting there.

I knew something was wrong.

But I knew it was too late to save them. One sick cock managed to come sit beside me (no chicken has ever done this to me before in my life!)

Apparently, the chickens saw a snake and attempted to kill it themselves.

But obviously, the snake fought back and boom! It bit 2 cocks. (We knew about this after further investigations)

The snake was portrayed to be a small, but poisonous snake. (The venom was very slow in killing the chickens. That means it was a small snake).

The chickens went outside the fence. (I mean the bigger fence) and you know the general nature of chickensโ€”- always searching everywhere for food. Unfortunately, they found snake instead.

So these cocks were near death. And it was so sad because one cock actually sat beside me. Like he knew what was about to happen. He died by my side.

I didnโ€™t know chickens could discern death. I didnโ€™t know they knew when death was near for them.

Thatโ€™s why I said there are a lot of things you donโ€™t know about chickens. A lot!

After minutes, the second one died.

Like I said, I donโ€™t have chickens to kill or sell (it isnโ€™t my priority)

I have them to observe their lifestyle and study how they are beautifully and wonderfully made. So when they die, I donโ€™t think of how much Iโ€™ve lost. I think of how well I got to know them.

Alright, enough of that quite sad experience

Letโ€™s go to another funny one.

The day the live chickens ๐Ÿ“ didnโ€™t eat a fried chicken ๐Ÿ— ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I love doing crazy stuffs ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚and speaking of crazy, I would throw fried chicken ๐Ÿ— to the live chickens ๐Ÿ“ to see if they would eat their own kind๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

They are always angry when I do that. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

They might not eat their feed for the next hours because of what I did๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

When Iโ€™m eating the chicken, I would throw it in bits to them. They would sniff it and use their legs to swing it off๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

They would then let out their sounds, showing that they are inconvenient.

And I would be laughing so hard at them๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

They would then start shouting ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Itโ€™s always so funny ๐Ÿ˜†

The time we brought a bigger roaster to the flock ๐Ÿ˜‚

Olomida was the biggest cock at the flock. He was the highest in the pecking order. So he loved his space and his authority.

But someone gifted us a very big roaster. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚this roaster was so big that he couldnโ€™t move too much. The weight was intense! ๐Ÿ˜… He was bigger than Olomida

So I knew pretty well that I shouldnโ€™t put the big roaster in the flock where Olomida was. They would obviously fight.

But because Olomida has always annoyed me and the other cocks (he doesnโ€™t let the other cocks mate with the hens. He does all the mating by himself, and himself alone๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚) so I perceived that the other cocks wanted revenge. But they couldnโ€™t withstand Olomida.

So I brought the bigger roaster to the flock where Olomida was. At first, Olomida froze. (He had one of his legs freezing up in the air ๐Ÿ˜‚)

โ€œHeyy!!! Whoโ€™s this big butt cock that challenges my authority in this nation โ€”-the nation of chickens?โ€ Screams Olomida ๐Ÿ˜‚

The biggest roaster just ignored Olomida and looked somewhere else. โ€œNahhh, I would just eat up this cock like Iโ€™m eating my feedโ€ he says.

(Okay, ๐Ÿ˜‚they didnโ€™t say these, but they made sounds. And I used common sense to figure out what they were saying)๐Ÿ˜‚

Then Olomida came charging towards the bigger cock๐Ÿ˜‚

They looked each other in the eyes angrily and then Olomida started pecking the bigger cock. I thought Olomida would kill the bigger cock, but as I wanted to go save the bigger cock, I saw that the drama quickly changed.

The bigger cock pecked Olomida on the neck and then stood on Olomida ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜‚

Olomida couldnโ€™t move under the huge weight of the bigger cock.

The other chickens in the flock stood still. They couldnโ€™t believe what was happening!!!! Olomida was getting helpless!! They were in shock. They were just looking at the fight the way we look when we watch horror movies ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Then Olomida was passing away. I rushed to lift the bigger cock off the back of Olomida.

Olomida wanted to move, but fell to the ground. He was so weak. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚he couldnโ€™t move at all. I was scared, I thought he would die ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚but nahhhhh, he didnโ€™t die. I placed him in a calm place and he regained his strength back.

Mother Hen saves her chicks from the Hawk.

One of the things that get me so scared about chicks ๐Ÿฃ, is their exposure of flying predators.

At my side, the Hawk is the sworn enemy of the chickens. The Hawks would fly down at the chicks, snatch them, and fly up to the air.

It was so horrifying to watch. And I always feel the pain of the Mother Hen, anytime she sees her babies being snatched by the Hawk.

But on this calm afternoon, I was outside as usual, watching my chickens. Mother Hen just hatched her eggs the previous week. And I was watching them play around.

Then I saw some hawks hovering above the flocks, looking for the best time to strike.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚just as one idiot and unfortunate Hawk came down to hijack a chick, mother Hen flew on the Hawk. The Hawk wanted to fly up again, but the weight of mother hen holding on to his feathers prevented it from doing so.

They really fought. Mother Hen pecked the Hawk so much! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚itโ€™s was sooooo funny and entertaining. The Hawk was frightened. Mother Hen made sure she plucked out some feathers from the Hawk, with her beak.

Other hawks above would have surely seen the whole drama.

Mother Hen successfully defended her chicks from the hawks. Everyone was happy. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ

The day I ate an egg that was almost hatched ๐Ÿคข

Okay, this is the last experience Iโ€™m going to share ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Back then, I couldnโ€™t distinguish between eggs for consumption, and eggs for hatching.

And Iโ€™ve never thought of taking eggs from the cages to eat๐Ÿ˜‚

But on this day, I was bored and I wasnโ€™t hungry, but I felt like eating egg. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™ve got crates of eggs at home, but I wanted to pick one fresh one from the cage ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

So I went to pick up to pick an egg that looked like the ones on the crate at home๐Ÿ˜‚ and I went to boil it.

I boiled it and I peeled the shell off, then I threw it into my mouth whole, and ate it ๐Ÿ˜‚

But I felt that the smell of the egg wasnโ€™t the same with the โ€œregularโ€ eggs Iโ€™m used to. But I just brushed the thought off my mind.

Then after a week and 3 days, the cage where I took the egg from, I saw that the other eggs werenโ€™t eggs, but chicks!!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

What?!!!!!!!!!!! Technically, I just boiled and ate up a premature chick ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ

Itโ€™s so disgusting!!!!

Well, I know for sure that I canโ€™t make that mistake again. Iโ€™m wiser now.

So with all my experiences shared, you will understand my reasons for choosing the chicken as my best animal.

I tried to make this post entertaining and fun to read as much as possible.

I didnโ€™t share all my experiences, but with time, I will keep updating you about some fun experiences that I had with the chickens

      1. Over the years, I have loved beagles, chipmunks, and buffalo, but now, I would like an old mutt – medium sized dog – that needs an occasional belly rub and is willing to take a lot of naps.

      2. Youโ€™ve loved Buffalos๐Ÿ˜ƒ wow, you are first person that Iโ€™ve seen to love Buffalos. (Maybe cuz I donโ€™t know how awesome they are) ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Yes,๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚I think that would be perfect for you. Especially the part that says โ€œ…willing to take a lot of napsโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can both take naps together ๐Ÿ˜

      3. Taking naps together is the idea.

But as for the buffalo, I was a teen-ager when a buffalo herd in South Dakota, in the Black Hills, decided that they wanted to stand in the road instead of moving to the side. The buffalo does what it does when it wants to do it. At the time, we had no idea how much danger we were in, but my father was smart enough to sit in the car until the many buffalo on the road got hungry and found out that the pavement was not nourishing. But for about an hour, we got to see the beasts from very close, smell them, and hear them, mostly snorting at each other. And bison (buffalo) burgers are pretty tasty – carefully controlled to control the size of the herds – although the herd in Yellowstone NP, Wyoming is not controlled, trying to let nature control the balance,

      4. Wow, thatโ€™s a pretty close experience with the Buffalo ๐Ÿƒ
I have only seen buffalos in movies, I have never seen them in real life.

But I quite agree to your point of them โ€œdoing what they want, when they wantโ€

Buffalo burgers ๐Ÿ˜…wow, thatโ€™s interesting to hear. I would really love to try it out surely

Yes, nature is the best to control them

I donโ€™t know why, but I love it when I see chickens chase people

Itโ€™s always a funny thing to see. They are really defensive birds ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚and they know how to use their beaks well

  3. What a wonderfully funny, yet sad story all weaved around chickens. I really learned a lot about the nature of chickens. I bet you will never leave your food around another rooster!๐Ÿ˜Š I grew up in the city, so I feel cheated when I read so many interesting stories from my fellow Bloggers who were fortunate to grow up in the country. I believe country living gives one a keener understanding of nature and keener awareness of God’s creation.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ฃ
